Stone house restoration

The medieval property is located in the settlement of Anavatos of Chios – unique historic protected monument and archaeological site – and specifically in the “lower settlement”, i.e. in the newest extension after the earthquake of 1881 and at a very short distance and in direct visual contact with the parish church of ‘Taxiarchis’.

The abandoned image of the studied property and its strategic position, in a prominent location in the ‘navel’ of the settlement, necessitated the restoration of the building. The aim of the study was the harmonization of the house in its special environment and the consistency of the morphological characteristics with the whole of the existing historical buildings of the entire settlement. For this reason, the works carried out on the property were specific, oriented towards the realization of the original goal. In particular, the stonework of the existing old ground-floor house was highlighted, the later added volume where the kitchen and bathroom of the house are located was lined with stonework (identical to the original one of the house) and the existing metal frames were replaced and modified with new wooden ones in the proportions of the openings of buildings of the settlement.
